On Tuesday last week, after Windows patched sixty (60) vulnerabilities, two of which were zero-days as well as the final PrintNightmare patch, administrators reported network printing problems across the board. After the update installation, environments using Windows Point and Print required administrative credentials for installation every time a print client connected to a print server on the network. According to Microsoft, “This is caused by a print driver on the print client and the print server using the same filename, but the server has a newer version of the file.” The mitigation for this is that system administrators must make sure that all print servers and printer clients have the exact same latest printer driver version installed. Also, users have indicated that specifically the PrintNightmare update has negatively affected network printing as well, and system administrators attempting to print or connect printers to their networks were complaining of receiving error messages like, “Connect to printer Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation failed with error 0x0000011b,” and the printer fails to install. BleepingComputer has reached out to Microsoft for answers to these networking issues, and the Ankura CTAPT will provide updates to our readers on this matter as they develop.
