Since the discovery and exploitation of CVE-2021-44228, commonly referred to as the Log4j flaw, threat actors worldwide have been sweeping across organizations looking for vulnerable entities to target. The Charming Kitten threat group (APT35) has been seen targeting several Israeli entities, scanning for vulnerable systems susceptible to the Log4j exploit. In just one (1) day, Charming Kitten threat actors targeted seven (7) organizations in the government and business sectors, leaving behind traces of communications to command and control servers attributed to the threat group. Furthermore, these attacks occurred within a ten (10) hour time frame during off-business hours; 1600 – 0200 TLV time. Alongside Charming Kitten, there has also been Log4j exploitation activity coming from Conti ransomware actors. These threat actors utilized the exploit in an attempt to compromise internal VMware vCenter Server and virtualization software devices and deploy additional malicious payloads on the target. Thus far, Conti is one of the first major players to weaponize the Log4j vulnerability and utilize it in their daily operations. CTIX is continuing to monitor cyber threats surrounding the Log4j vulnerability and will provide additional insight accordingly.
