Pegasus Spyware Found on US Embassy Employee Phones

Apple reached out to the United States State Department this week to notify them of a suspected Pegasus Spyware attack targeting US Embassy officials. This is the first attack targeting employees of the US government since the malware was discovered in 2016. A total of eleven (11) employees were affected, with most residing in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, and the others working on projects with the Ugandan government. In response to the attack, the NSO Group, the creators of the Pegasus spyware, stated they revoked the access of the offending customer and will take appropriate legal action if necessary. This follows a host of recent activity relating to the spyware industry and the NSO Group itself. In the past month, the US has sanctioned the NSO Group over their spyware and is working with over one hundred (100) countries in an attempt to limit the export of surveillance software to oppressive governments. Apple has recently filed a lawsuit against the NSO Group for targeting Apple users and devices, citing a copyright violation. With as many actions taken against the NSO Group in the past, this may be the final straw in the fight against surveillance software.
