A new report from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) exposes 29,000 offshore “havens” owned by politicians, public officials, and popular personalities. Named the “Pandora Papers”, this investigation is “larger and more global than even ICIJ’s landmark Panama Papers investigation” that released in 2016. With collaboration from 150 different news outlets, this is one of the largest investigations into financial secrecy. The documents expose 35 current and former world leaders including the King of Jordan, the presidents of Ukraine, Kenya, and Ecuador, the prime minister of the Czech Republic and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. The journalists dive into individual “power players“, exposing the way each hide money using offshore accounts. While none of the politicians are based in the United States, the Pandora Papers expose how US trusts created in South Dakota, Florida, Delaware, Texas, and Nevada are secretly abused by other countries’ political leaders, including thirty (30) US trusts that were linked to “foreigners personally accused of misconduct or whose companies were accused of wrongdoing.” The entire report contains 2.94 terabytes of information, and the ICIJ are continuing to release articles on the individual findings.
