MediaMarkt, Europe’s consumer electronics retail giant, suffered a ransomware attack early this week that was conducted by the Hive ransomware operation and impacted IT systems as well as numerous store operations in the Netherlands and Germany. BleepingComputer detailed that various servers and workstations were encrypted during the attack and that the credit cards, receipts, or return functions of cash registers became inaccessible. It has been confirmed that Hive initially demanded a ransom of $240 million in order to gain a decryptor, but BleepingComputer did note that it has since been greatly reduced to a currently unknown amount. It is also unclear if information was exfiltrated during the attack, but MediaMarkt released a statement ensuring that the company is “working at full speed to identify the affected systems and repair any damage caused as quickly as possible”. Additional details will be provided by CTAPT once information regarding affected systems and any compromised data is revealed to the public.
