JVCKenwood, a multinational electronics company that provides equipment for various industries and is based in Japan, recently suffered a ransomware attack conducted by the Conti threat group. In a press release, JVCKenwood revealed that unauthorized access occurred on a portion of their European sale companies’ servers in late September 2021 and that the third party who accessed the servers may have caused an “information leak”. BleepingComputer obtained access to the ransomware note for this attack, and explained, after viewing the negotiation chat, that the Conti ransomware group claimed to have stolen 1.5 terabytes (TBs) of files. Conti is currently demanding $7 million in order to not publish JVCKenwood’s supposed stolen files on their leak site as well as provide a decryptor. The threat group did provide a file containing an employee’s scanned passport to the company as proof of the theft, but JVCKenwood has yet to confirm the data breach regarding customer data. CTAPT analysis will monitor this incident as it unfolds and provide updates regarding the potential data breach as information is published.
