A high school senior named Minh pranked the entire Illinois Township High School District 214 in April as part of a senior prank by exploiting zero-day vulnerabilities within the district’s Exterity IPTV systems. Minh coined the hack “Big Rick,” and facilitated it by scanning the district’s network for vulnerable devices, and then deploying a timed payload that would execute during a school recess period (as to not interfere with actual school operations) and take over all of the school TVs. Upon execution of the payload every classroom TV in the district displayed a black screen with a countdown on it, and at zero “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley played (known as getting “Rick-Rolled”). The flaws that were exploited are a series of privilege escalation vulnerabilities that allowed the student to acquire the administrative permissions needed to plant the payload. The district administrators did not punish Minh in any way, stating that they considered it a white-hat hack. The student has stated that he contacted Exterity to report the vulnerabilities, however he never got any response from them, and is not sure if the two flaws have been patched yet. Minh is currently a University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign student pursuing a career in cybersecurity. This prank stresses how important it is for organizations to conduct due diligence and ensure devices and their software are up to date. In the future, the Ankura CTAPT will continue to report on interesting vulnerabilities and their exploits.
