French national data protection authority (CNIL) took action against a local website with the assertion that its use of Google Analytics violates the European Union’s (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This decision follows a similar case in Austria where a medical news company, NetDoktor, was banned from using Google Analytics due to its GDPR violations. Google Analytics is a tool used by webmasters worldwide to track users on their platforms. Once added to a website, it places a cookie on the user’s browser which collects data on how the user interacts with the page. European regulators, including CNIL, have been investigating complaints over the past two years alleging that the US “Privacy Shield” agreement inadequately addresses privacy issues. The root of the issue stems from Google Analytics sending data back to US servers, giving up control of that data for EU users. Following the recent pushback of Facebook and Instagram in Europe, it is clear the EU wants to increase its citizens privacy in 2022.
