On December 1st, Europol completed an anti-money mule operation named EMMA 7 in cooperation with 26 countries and multiple law enforcement organizations. This is a huge win for the fight against cybercriminals because, according to Europol, 90 percent of money mule transactions are linked to cybercrime. Money mule’s accept fraudulent transactions to their normal-looking bank accounts then transfer the money down the line or take it out in cash. Threat actors and scammers use these mules to launder money and conceal their money trail from law enforcement. The EMMA 7 operation resulted in over 18,000 money mules identified, 1,803 individuals arrested, and 6.7 million euro in prevented losses. The operation was based on collaboration between law enforcement and private sector actors who report specific instances of potentially illegal financial transactions. Building a platform to share intelligence allowed efficient identification of individual money mules and the networks behind them. Europol states that most money mules often do not realize what they are doing is illegal, so they built an awareness campaign named “#DontBeAMule” as a way to prevent innocent citizen from being exploited in this way. The conclusion of this operation has disrupted many threat groups and will surely be felt by cybercriminals.
