Critical Infrastructure Wind Turbine Giant Vestas Wind Systems Suffers Cyberattack

Vestas Wind Systems, a wind turbine manufacturing giant in North America, suffered a cyberattack late last week that shut down its IT systems in various locations. In a statement released Monday, November 22nd, Vetas Wind Systems explained that “preliminary findings indicate that theĀ incident has impacted parts of Vestas’ internal IT infrastructure and that data has been compromised”, in which an investigation is ongoing to determine the severity of the compromised data. At this time, the company has not revealed the type of cyberattack or the actor/group responsible. Vestas Wind Systems is considered critical infrastructure due to the services it provides, the amount of manufacturing plant locations, and the annual operating income. Attacks on critical infrastructure have been on the rise throughout 2021 and CTAPT analysts will continue to monitor for additional attacks before the year’s end.
