Bitcoin.org, the official website for the Bitcoin project, was hijacked by threat actors late last week to promote a cryptocurrency giveaway scam. The scam was located on the homepage of the website and read: “The Bitcoin Foundation is giving back to the community! We want to support our users who have helped us along the years. Send Bitcoin to this address, and we will send double the amount in return!”. It also read that the giveaway was limited to the first 10,000 users and had a QR code to scan for the attacker’s wallet address, which is also listed underneath. Bitcoin[.]org was disabled by Namecheap, the domain’s registrar, shortly after the hack and within the same day, but some users still fell victim to the scam during the time in between. The most recent balance of the attacker’s wallet was approximately $17,000 USD. The cause of the domain hijack is still unconfirmed as well as the identities of the threat actors, but it is being speculated that a DNS hijack is to blame. Bitcoin[.]org is fully restored, and cryptocurrency users are advised to be wary of the ever-growing rise of cryptocurrency scams.
