Argentina’s People Registry Database Leaked

A recent post on the infamous hacking forum RaidForums revealed a hack that occurred last month against the Argentinian government’s IT network. The hacker specifically targeted the RENAPER database, which stands for the “Registro Nacional de las Personas” translated as the National Registry of Persons. The first hint at the attack occurred earlier this month, when a Twitter user by the name “@AnibalLeaks” posted ID card photos and personal details for forty-four (forty-four ()44) Argentinian celebrities. The next day a post appeared selling the data on RaidForums with an example showing information the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez. On October 13th, the Ministry of Interior published a press release that stated their security team discovered a VPN account for the Ministry of Health was used to query the RENAPER database, “in the exact moment in which they were published on the social network Twitter” and added that the database “did not suffer any data breach or leak.” The hacker claims to have a copy of the RENAPER database and has been renting access to it on hacking forums. In a chat with The Record, the hacker stated they may publish the data of one to two million people in “a few days.” CTAPT analysts are monitoring the situation and will update if more data is leaked.
