The NSO Group, the infamous Israeli company that develops military-grade spyware Pegasus, is facing a lawsuit from Apple. The suit hinges on the FORCEDENTRY exploit, an IOS zero-day that the NSO Group has developed and used since February 2021. The exploit was then sold to the Bahraini government which abused the vulnerability to attack those who spoke out against the government. This is not the first time the NSO Group was sued because of an exploit, and in October 2019, Facebook sued the company for developing and using a WhatsApp zero-day. Both lawsuits claim that the NSO Group did not properly vet its customers and sold dangerous exploits to organizations which intend to abuse it. Apple stated they will donate $10 million and any damages they receive from the lawsuit to organizations analyzing these cyber-surveillance tools. Time will tell if this lawsuit will truly help stop the growing abuse of state-sponsored spyware.
